Ocean 21™ Solutions

Fully integrated technologies already proven in oceanic airspace are enabling airlines to fly more direct routes, use less fuel, save money and reduce emissions.

Lockheed Martin, in concert with Adacel Technologies Limited and Airways Corporation of New Zealand, has developed global requirements for modern oceanic air traffic management (ATM) services that are helping to upgrade oceanic services worldwide.

Applying NextGen Concepts

The Lockheed Martin-led Ocean21 solution applies Next Generation Air Transportation (NextGen) concepts to oceanic flights, which is enabling significant gains in safety, security, capacity, efficiency and environmental compatibility. Through our team’s work, key NextGen concepts are a reality today.

Ocean21 technology integrates Adacel’s Aurora oceanic ATM system and Airways New Zealand’s operational concepts and procedures associated with advanced communications, navigation, surveillance and air traffic management (CNS/ATM) technology.

Advanced Technologies and Oceanic Procedures (ATOP)

Concepts of our global oceanic services are part of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Advanced Technologies and Oceanic Procedures (ATOP) initiative, the world’s most advanced mixed-mode air traffic control system.

ATOP also has introduced controllers to the NextGen concept of managing aircraft by exception. ATOP provides a highly advanced platform that will help enable continual and incremental advancements vital to U.S. NextGen and Eurocontrol single-sky strategies.

Our Ocean21 solution uses GPS-enabled technologies that free air traffic controllers from many routine, manual tasks so that they can focus on what they do best — resolving situations and keeping order in the skies. Compared to being like a “carpool lane in the sky,” the technologies help aircraft spend more time in their preferred routes and keep shorter separation distances at no sacrifice of safety.
