Capability and Reliability Increase in Fourth Generation Unmanned Aerial System Launcher

In response to the growing need to support expeditionary, strategic and shipboard unmanned aerial systems (UAS), Lockheed Martin teamed with Robonic Ltd Oy, based out of Finland, to provide a fourth generation UAS launcher. Under the license agreement Lockheed Martin will produce, maintain, and support the OHTO launcher for customers in the U.S. and Canada, and for all Fury UAS systems around the globe.

The OHTO launcher provides flexibility to support a broad range of unmanned platforms and targets, including the Group 3 long endurance Fury UAS, developed by Lockheed Martin.  Currently, the Fury UAS uses a third generation Robonic launcher to support flight testing and initial operations; the OHTO launcher provides further refinement in size, weight, and power while reducing operational cost and improving operational reliability.

“The OHTO launcher’s design reduces the number of operators from three or four to one, and also cuts the set up time to fewer than 10 minutes,” said Jay McConville, director of business development for Unmanned Integrated Solutions at Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Training. “At the same time, the OHTO launcher drives affordability by reducing the overall cost to operate unmanned systems.”

The OHTO launcher includes Robonic’s launch lock system, which greatly decreases the shock during vehicle launch, thus reducing stress on the airframe, mission systems, and payloads.  The launcher is designed to meet expeditionary deployment requirements and provides an accurate, repeatable launch velocity across a wide range of air vehicle designs and take off weights.
