Murtaza Ahmed, a Portfolio Manager in Information Systems & Global Solutions at Lockheed Marin, was recently selected as one of Federal Computer Week’s 2014 Rising Stars, a recognition given to those individuals who are early into their careers and who bring new energy and ideas to the table.

As the portfolio manager overseeing 200 employees on 19 different programs nationwide for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Murtaza has a strong focus on customer centricity and delivers exceptional performance in support of their mission to protect human health and the environment. We sat down and learned more about his passion for the important work he is doing with the EPA.

Congratulations on your recent honor being selected as one of Federal Computer Week’s 2014 Rising Stars. What did winning the award mean to you?

I was thrilled to hear that I was being nominated for the Rising Star award by my leadership, it reassured the trust that my leadership had put in me. When I found out that I had been selected, I was overjoyed and very pleased to find out that my hard work was being recognized outside of Lockheed Martin, as well.

What is your role at Lockheed Martin?

In my current position, I am a portfolio manager, overseeing all the work that Lockheed Martin performs at the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA). We have more than 19 different programs that provide the EPA with environmental, technical and mission support services. It is challenging, but very satisfying to know that the work we do directly impacts the environment in which we all live, learn and work. I am responsible to ensure that Lockheed Martin continues to play a vital role in enhancing EPA’s mission and supporting its strategic plan.

How do you think energy and environmental solutions will play a role in the future of Lockheed Martin?

Energy solutions will quickly become a significant part of Lockheed Martin’s business, as we as a nation work toward achieving 25 percent renewable energy by 2025 and 80 percent greenhouse gas reduction by 2050. Over 60 major commercial, federal and state customers are working with us for more efficient energy solutions, and this number can only grow. We provide technical and analytical expertise during environmental emergencies in the U.S. and U.S. territories and are the nation’s largest implementers of energy efficiency programs for utility customers. We are seeing more and more international customers showing interest in renewable and energy efficient programs as well.

What do you enjoy most about supporting the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)?

All the work that we do at the EPA directly impacts the environment we all live in and that is what I love the most about supporting the mission. It is very satisfying to know that the people we support at the EPA are working towards protecting human health, environmental health, enforcing policies, and ensuring that citizens have access to accurate information to effectively participate in managing human health and environmental risks.
